Xbox Developer Direct Stirs Speculation with Hidden Game Reveals

Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Developer Direct event is shaping up to be bigger than initially announced, with industry insiders suggesting multiple unannounced titles are waiting in the wings. While the January 23 showcase already promises updates on South of Midnight, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, there appears to be more brewing behind the scenes.

Windows Central reporter Jez Corden has heightened anticipation by hinting at “more than one surprise” planned for the presentation. Most intriguingly, one of these unexpected reveals is reportedly tied to a “legendary” Japanese franchise with decades of gaming history. This tease has sparked discussions about potential collaborations with industry giants like Square Enix or Sega, with the latter’s strengthening partnership with Microsoft lending credibility to the speculation.

The existing lineup features three games slated for 2025 releases, though none have locked in specific launch dates. The Developer Direct presentation could finally pin down these anticipated arrival windows while unveiling its mystery additions to the Xbox roster.

Gaming communities are buzzing with theories about potential reveals, including whispers of a The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake reportedly under development at Virtuos. Other speculated titles include Ninja Gaiden 4, Persona 6, and a possible Final Fantasy 9 remake, though these remain unconfirmed.

The Xbox Developer Direct will stream on both Twitch and YouTube at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT on January 23. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can expect news about upcoming day-one releases planned for the service throughout 2025.
