Team Ninja partners with PlatinumGames for next Ninja Gaiden chapter
The iconic action series returns with fresh mechanics and a new protagonist for modern platforms.
Team Ninja has unveiled its latest project during the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, announcing a new mainline entry in the Ninja Gaiden series. The upcoming title marks a significant collaboration with PlatinumGames and will be available through Xbox Game Pass on launch day.
The announcement comes as part of Team Ninja’s 30th-anniversary celebrations in 2025, following earlier hints about multiple projects in development. The partnership with PlatinumGames signals a fresh direction for the beloved action franchise, with a targeted release window set for fall 2025.
Ninja Gaiden introduces Yakumo as new playable character
While series veteran Ryu Hayabusa remains part of the story, players will step into the role of a new protagonist named Yakumo. PlatinumGames’ producer and director Yuji Nakao explained that this change aims to create an entry point for newcomers while maintaining the series’ continuity as a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3. Ryu will still maintain a crucial presence in the narrative and become playable at some point during the adventure.
The latest installment brings enhanced mobility options, incorporating wire and rail systems for dynamic traversal. Combat retains the series’ trademark intensity while introducing new movesets alongside returning abilities. Team Ninja confirms that the challenging difficulty level fans expect from the franchise remains intact.
The game will launch simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. While awaiting more details about the new release, fans can experience Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a complete Unreal Engine 5 remake of the classic title, which was released on January 23 for PC and consoles, including availability through Xbox Game Pass.
