French RPG Clair Obscur joins Xbox Game Pass lineup with Belle Epoque aesthetic

Microsoft‘s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate continues to expand its library with Sandfall Interactive’s upcoming turn-based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The French developer’s creation, which draws inspiration from Final Fantasy and the Persona series, will debut on April 24, 2025.

First revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 features a distinctive visual style inspired by the French Belle Epoque period. The narrative follows the journey of Expedition 33’s members as they embark on a mission to stop the mysterious Paintress, an entity with the power to paint death itself.

The recent Xbox Developer Direct presentation highlighted the game’s combat system, which blends turn-based mechanics with real-time elements. Each party member brings unique abilities to the battlefield, offering players diverse tactical options during encounters.

Clair Obscur arrives with competitive pricing strategy

For those without an active Game Pass subscription, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be available for $50. Sandfall Interactive explained this pricing decision reflects both their status as an independent studio and their goal to make the game more accessible compared to traditional $70 RPG releases.

The developer estimates a playtime of at least 30 hours for the main story, with additional optional content expanding the experience further. This French RPG joins an impressive lineup of day-one Game Pass releases in 2025, including Obsidian’s Avowed on February 18, Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight on April 8, and id Software’s Doom: The Dark Ages on May 15.
