Marvel plans fresh Avengers gaming venture separate from Crystal Dynamics

Following the closure of Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers in September 2023, reports suggest a new Avengers video game project is in the works. According to gaming industry insider Daniel Richtman on Patreon, Marvel aims to develop a standalone Avengers title that will have no connection to the previous Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics release.

The 2020 live-service Marvel’s Avengers struggled to maintain its player base amid criticism of its monetization strategy and combat mechanics. Despite post-launch content updates, the game failed to meet expectations, leading to its discontinuation last year.

Marvel’s superhero presence in gaming continues to expand through various projects. Characters from the Avengers roster have appeared in Marvel’s Midnight Suns and the new Marvel Rivals. Meanwhile, separate projects featuring iconic heroes are in development, including Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra starring Captain America and Azzuri’s Black Panther, as well as EA‘s upcoming single-player adventures featuring Iron Man and the modern-day Black Panther.

Marvel explores MCU connection for rumored Avengers project

The news follows earlier speculation from last summer about Marvel developing a game set within the MCU universe. While these two projects could potentially be related, neither rumor has received official confirmation from Marvel or any gaming studios.

Recent successes in the Marvel gaming universe, including Marvel Rivals and Insomniac’s Spider-Man series, demonstrate continued player interest in superhero-themed games. The potential new Avengers project could offer a fresh take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, learning from past experiences to deliver a different gaming experience.
