Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Sales Hit 1.3 Million Despite Initial Struggles

Ubisoft‘s Associate Marketing Director Alexandre Guenounou has revealed that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has accumulated 1.3 million unit sales since its launch in early 2024. The milestone comes after a challenging start that saw the title selling 300,000 units in its first two weeks of release.

The game, which marked the franchise’s return after more than a decade, received strong critical acclaim with an 87 average score on OpenCritic. Despite positive reviews positioning it among 2024’s premier Metroidvania titles, the initial sales performance reportedly fell short of Ubisoft’s internal projections.

Development Team Changes and Content Updates

The commercial performance led to significant changes at Ubisoft Montpellier, with the development team being disbanded in late 2024. While Ubisoft indicated that staff would be reassigned to other projects, the studio restructuring affected the game’s post-launch plans. The planned sequel was ultimately transformed into downloadable content, resulting in the “Mask of Darkness” DLC released in September 2024.

Broader Impact on Ubisoft

The Lost Crown’s performance reflects broader challenges facing Ubisoft, as other recent releases including Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora have also struggled to meet expectations. The company has recently implemented significant organizational changes, including the closure of Ubisoft Leamington and workforce reductions at multiple studios, affecting 185 employees.

Industry analysts are closely monitoring Ubisoft’s next moves, particularly with reports suggesting potential structural changes involving Tencent and the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in March. The company’s performance in the coming months may prove crucial for its future direction.
