PlayStation Veteran Yoshida Reflects on Horizon Forbidden West’s Market Performance
Former PlayStation executive shares unexpected insights about the acclaimed game’s commercial journey.
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has opened up about his expectations for Horizon Forbidden West, revealing an unexpected perspective on the game’s commercial performance. During a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida expressed surprise at the action-adventure title’s sales figures, despite the game moving 8.4 million units by April 2023.
The gaming industry veteran, who recently stepped down from his position as SIE Worldwide Studios President, noted that sequels typically outperform their predecessors due to established fan bases. While praising Forbidden West as “bigger and great,” Yoshida’s comments suggest internal expectations at PlayStation may have been set even higher for Aloy’s second adventure.
The numbers tell an interesting story: Horizon Forbidden West achieved significant milestones, becoming the second-biggest PlayStation 5 launch in the UK. The broader Horizon franchise has demonstrated strong market presence, with total series sales reaching 32.7 million copies. The game’s recent PC release in March 2024 has further expanded its reach, following the pattern set by its predecessor.
The Horizon franchise continues to evolve beyond traditional gaming formats. LEGO Horizon Adventures marked the series’ debut on Nintendo platforms, offering a more family-friendly take on the post-apocalyptic world. Multiple projects are reportedly in development, including a third mainline entry and a multiplayer spin-off. Additionally, Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are collaborating on a live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn.
Horizon Forbidden West, alongside its Burning Shores DLC expansion, has garnered praise for its stunning visuals and engaging combat system. The game follows Aloy’s journey through the ruins of the western United States as she investigates a mysterious plague threatening the world’s survivors.
