Team Cherry Breaks Silence on Hollow Knight: Silksong Development Status
Studio confirms the anticipated sequel is still in active development and moving forward.
The much-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed Metroidvania game Hollow Knight has received a rare status update from Australian indie developer Team Cherry. The studio’s head of marketing and publishing, Matthew Griffin, has confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong is still very much alive and in development.
First announced in February 2019, Silksong began as DLC for the original Hollow Knight before evolving into a full-fledged sequel. The original game, released in 2017, earned widespread acclaim for its haunting art style, memorable music, and challenging gameplay as players explored a mysterious underground kingdom.
The extended silence surrounding the project has led to speculation within the gaming community, particularly following its absence from major gaming events like Gamescom 2024 and The Game Awards 2024. Griffin’s statement that the game “is real, progressing, and will release” marks a rare communication from the development team.
When Silksong eventually launches, players will step into the role of Hornet, exploring the haunted kingdom of Pharloom. Team Cherry has revealed ambitious plans for the sequel, promising a significantly larger experience than its predecessor. The game is set to feature over 100 checkpoints and approximately 165 new enemy types, showcasing the expanded scope of the project.
While the development timeline has stretched beyond the initial planned release in early 2023, a playtester’s statement in June 2024 supported the ongoing progress of the game. Some fans speculate about potential optimization for upcoming platforms, while others anticipate possible news on February 14, marking the anniversary of the game’s original announcement.
