PlayStation’s Horizon MMO Project Faces Major Development Shift
Sony’s ambitious MMO project with NCSoft takes an unexpected turn amid live-service strategy changes.
A significant change has emerged in PlayStation‘s gaming pipeline as evidence suggests the rumored Horizon MMO project, developed in partnership with South Korean studio NCSoft, has been discontinued. The project, known internally as “Project H,” was one of several live-service initiatives under Sony’s umbrella.
The development originally came to light through South Korean media outlet MTN in November 2022, when reports surfaced about NCSoft’s involvement in a Horizon MMORPG. While neither company officially confirmed the collaboration, NCSoft’s continuous job postings referencing “Project H” had maintained speculation about the game’s development.
Recent reports indicate that Sony made the decision to halt the project in late 2024, with team members receiving reassignments in early 2025. This move aligns with other notable changes in Sony’s live-service strategy, including the discontinuation of projects from Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio.
The gaming giant’s restructuring of its live-service portfolio has been substantial, with Project H joining several other canceled initiatives. Notable among these were Bungie’s Destiny spin-off “Payback,” London Studio’s fantasy project, and Firesprite’s pre-production work on a Twisted Metal title. The troubled launch of Concord in August 2024, which saw an early shutdown, also marked a significant setback for Sony’s live-service ambitions.
While this particular MMO project may not see completion, the Horizon franchise’s multiplayer future isn’t entirely dim. Guerrilla Games, the original creators of the series, continues development on their own Horizon multiplayer project, first confirmed in 2022. Industry analysis of Guerrilla’s job listings suggests this upcoming title might be targeting Sony’s next console generation, potentially bypassing the PS5 entirely.
