Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers are in for a treat as id Software’s highly anticipated Doom: The Dark Ages has been confirmed for a day one release on the service. The medieval-themed prequel to the 2016 Doom reboot brings fresh elements to the franchise’s signature combat system, including a shield mechanic and rideable dragons.

The announcement came during the latest Xbox Developer Direct, validating previous release date speculation. While the game will also launch on PlayStation 5 at full retail price, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will have immediate access to this new chapter in the Doom saga at no additional cost.

Id Software has reimagined the franchise’s iconic gameplay for a medieval setting, introducing new combat mechanics while maintaining the series’ trademark intensity. The developer aims to create a more accessible experience for newcomers while preserving elements that longtime fans have come to expect.

Xbox Game Pass reinforces early 2025 catalog

The service’s January 2025 lineup features several notable additions. Eternal Strands and Orcs Must Die: Deathtrap arrive on January 28, followed by Shady Part of Me and Sniper Elite: Resistance on January 30. The month concludes with Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector joining the service on January 31.

The addition of Doom: The Dark Ages represents Microsoft’s ongoing strategy to strengthen Xbox Game Pass following its acquisition of ZeniMax Media. Under the current tier structure, only Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers receive access to day one releases.
