Electronic Arts market value drops amid recent game sales challenges
Major publisher faces setback as Dragon Age and EA Sports FC perform below expectations.
Electronic Arts faces a significant market downturn as its shares declined by more than 16% this week, resulting in approximately $6 billion being wiped from the company’s market value. This downturn reflects broader challenges in the gaming industry, where publishers are struggling to meet sales expectations for new releases.
According to Bloomberg’s recent report, two of EA‘s flagship titles have fallen short of projected targets. Dragon Age: The Veilguard achieved only half of its expected performance, reaching approximately 1.5 million players since launch. Similarly, EA Sports FC 2025, another major holiday release, failed to meet its anticipated goals despite the strength of both franchises.
Reuters reports that EA’s market value has dropped from $37.3 billion, with EA Sports FC franchise typically generating annual revenues of around $2 billion. The company’s separation from the FIFA license in May 2022 adds another layer of complexity to the situation, though its direct impact on recent FC series sales remains uncertain.
EA Sports FC maintains position among 2024’s top sellers despite challenges
Despite falling short of expectations, EA Sports FC 25 secured the eighth position among 2024’s best-selling titles, as revealed in Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s report. The game ranks behind other successful EA releases, including EA Sports College Football 25, NBA 2K25, and Madden NFL 25.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s performance has been particularly noteworthy, with sales figures trailing behind its predecessor, Dragon Age: Inquisition. While the game garnered a respectable 79 score on OpenCritic, fan reception has been mixed. Critics praised certain aspects while others expressed concerns about the new visual direction, action-focused gameplay mechanics, and narrative elements. These results may influence expectations for BioWare’s upcoming Mass Effect project, which currently remains without a confirmed release date. As EA Sports FC continues its annual release cycle, changes to the franchise might be anticipated in response to these recent developments.
