Final Fantasy 7 trilogy’s conclusion advances with platform expansion plans
Square Enix developers confirm PS5 release and hint at broader platform availability for final chapter.
Square Enix has confirmed that the concluding chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will launch on PlayStation 5, with potential plans for wider platform availability. The development team recently shared updates about the project’s progress and the company’s evolving approach to platform releases.
The journey of Final Fantasy 7 began with its original 1997 PlayStation release, which earned its place among the franchise’s most celebrated titles. Following multiple spin-offs, Square Enix announced the remake trilogy in 2015. The first part arrived in 2020, followed by Final Fantasy Rebirth in 2024, with the final installment anticipated around 2027 or 2028.
In a recent conversation with 4Gamer, producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the PS5 release, ensuring continuity for players who’ve experienced the previous entries. Hamaguchi’s mention of Square Enix’s intention to release future titles on a “wide range of platforms” suggests possible availability on Xbox Series X/S systems.
Development progress maintains steady pace for final chapter
In December, Hamaguchi shared that development was proceeding smoothly, though specific details remained under wraps. More recently, both Hamaguchi and Kitase reaffirmed the project’s steady progress, noting that development continues without major obstacles, though they’re not yet ready to announce an official release timeframe.
The possibility of expanded platform availability aligns with current industry speculation, including rumors of Final Fantasy 7 Remake appearing on the Switch 2. This broader distribution strategy could eventually bring the complete trilogy to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PC, and future console generations like the PS6. However, these possibilities remain unconfirmed until Square Enix makes official announcements.
