Monster Hunter Wilds revolutionizes combat with unlimited ammo system

Monster Hunter Wilds is set to introduce major changes to its combat system, as revealed by director Yuya Tokuda and art director Kaname Fujioka. The next mainline entry in Capcom‘s hunting franchise will feature significant updates to its arsenal of 14 weapon types, with a particular focus on streamlining the resource management experience.

One of the most notable changes affects ranged weapons like Bowguns and Bows. Players will no longer need to return to base camp to replenish their ammunition and coatings. Instead, these resources will operate on a gauge system, allowing for unlimited use while maintaining tactical depth through resource management.

The development team’s approach to weapon design began with the Great Sword as a prototype. “We begin by developing the Great Sword as a prototype, then verify weapons like the Sword and Shield and Heavy Bowgun, applying the knowledge we get from there,” Tokuda explained. This methodical approach was detailed in an IGN interview.

Monster Hunter Wilds expands combat with Focus Strike system

The game introduces the Focus Strike mechanic, a powerful weapon-specific attack that works alongside a new wounds system for dealing sustained damage to monsters. These additions complement the existing arsenal that includes fan favorites like the Long Sword, Bow, and Dual Blades.

Players can experience these changes during the second beta test in February 2025, which features content from the first test plus a new monster hunt featuring the Gypceros. Beta participants will receive an OBT 2 Bonus Item Pack that carries over to the full game, launching February 28, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

A collaboration between Monster Hunter Now and Monster Hunter Wilds offers additional rewards through limited-time Collab Event Quests. Mobile players can earn a gift code for the main game, unlocking items such as Mega Potions, Energy Drinks, and Dust of Life.
