NetEase plants decoy heroes in Marvel Rivals code to expose leakers

NetEase, the developer behind Marvel Rivals, may have orchestrated an ingenious plan to identify leakers by embedding false character information within the game’s data. The hero shooter, which currently features 35 Marvel characters, has only officially announced The Thing and The Human Torch from The Fantastic Four as upcoming additions to its roster.

Recent leaks suggested the arrival of popular X-Men characters such as Gambit, Rogue, and Jubilee, alongside fan-favorites like Deadpool and the Parker Robbins version of Ghost Rider. Nightcrawler was also reportedly spotted in the game files as a potential Duelist character. However, these unconfirmed additions now face increased scrutiny.

According to Dexerto, a Marvel Rivals Discord admin revealed that the development team likely planted fake character references in the source code. This calculated move appears designed to catch individuals sharing confidential information by tracking which false leads make their way to the public.

Marvel Rivals dataminers work to separate fact from fiction

While NetEase hasn’t officially confirmed this anti-leak strategy, the gaming community continues to analyze emerging information with increased skepticism. Dataminer zvis_ceral suggests that characters like Deadpool and Blade may be legitimate additions, while Professor X, Beast, and Gambit could be among the planted decoys.

The uncertainty surrounding these leaks has created a complex web of speculation within the Marvel Rivals community. With no way to verify which character additions are genuine, players must now approach all unofficial announcements with caution – precisely the outcome NetEase might have intended with this strategic misdirection.
