Smite 2 Unveils Fresh Approach to Content Distribution and Rewards

Hi-Rez Studios is shaking up the MOBA scene with a major overhaul to Smite 2’s content distribution system. The developer has implemented a new seasonal model that features both free and premium reward tracks, marking a significant departure from its predecessor’s approach.

The beloved MOBA, which launched its open beta on January 14, continues to differentiate itself from competitors like League of Legends and DOTA 2 through its distinctive third-person perspective. The beta currently offers players access to 45 playable gods, the Joust map, and an alpha version of the Assault mode.

According to recent updates on the game’s Steam page, players can now earn XP and Coins by completing various quests and daily challenges. These Coins serve as currency for seasonal collections, which rotate every eight weeks in the Wandering Market. Each collection consists of four content pages, with the first available free of charge and additional pages accessible through a premium track.

The new system allows for greater player flexibility, as multiple collections can be accessed simultaneously. Players aren’t required to complete one collection before moving to another, and free-to-play users can earn Diamonds – the game’s shop currency – along with skins and other cosmetic items. Premium pass holders naturally gain access to more lucrative rewards.

Each collection showcases unique character skins, with the current highlight being “Hot Stuff Poseidon,” transforming the Greek deity into a hot sauce bottle wielding a red pitchfork. The system incorporates a player-choice mechanism similar to Fortnite’s Battle Stars, allowing users to prioritize specific cosmetics. Hi-Rez Studios has confirmed that collections have no planned end date, suggesting a permanent availability similar to Helldivers 2’s battle pass structure.

This structural change represents a significant evolution from the original Smite, which primarily relied on individual collaborations with properties like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The new seasonal framework in the open beta phase introduces a more organized approach to content distribution, potentially offering a fresh incentive for veterans of the original game to make the transition.
