Clair Obscur Game Secures Live-Action Film Deal Before Release
Story Kitchen partners with Sandfall Interactive to adapt upcoming RPG for theatrical release.
In an unprecedented move, the upcoming RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has secured a live-action film adaptation months before its game release. The project, announced today, brings together game developer Sandfall Interactive and production company Story Kitchen to translate the French Belle Epoque-inspired world to the big screen.
Variety reports that Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg will spearhead the adaptation alongside producers Timothy I. Stevenson and Elena Sandoval. The production team expressed confidence in the project, citing the game’s “compelling narrative and complex characters” as key elements that will appeal to both gaming and general audiences.
The source material, set to release on April 24, follows Expedition 33’s quest to defeat a supernatural entity known as the Paintress, who possesses the ability to make people vanish through her artwork. The game, which combines turn-based RPG mechanics with action elements, was first revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024.
While casting and directorial decisions remain pending, the film’s production timeline suggests a theatrical release no earlier than 2026. This extended development window allows the game to establish its narrative universe and fan base before the film adaptation reaches audiences.
The game will launch simultaneously on multiple platforms, with PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements and day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Early interest in the property has already manifested through sold-out collector’s editions, which included exclusive items such as a hand-painted monolith music box and a 48-page artbook.
