GameStop Sets Purchase Limits on Latest Pokemon Card Collection Amid High Demand

GameStop has taken steps to manage the overwhelming demand for the Pokemon Trading Card Game’s latest expansion, “Prismatic Evolutions.” The retail chain announced purchasing restrictions as collectors and enthusiasts rush to acquire cards from the highly anticipated set.

The new policy, announced earlier this week, limits customers to two units per person, excluding previously placed pre-orders. GameStop explained this decision as a measure to provide fair access to the expansion for more fans. As an added benefit, the retailer will provide complimentary card savers and sleeves for PSA submissions during the January 17-19 weekend.

The “Prismatic Evolutions” set has generated significant buzz in the collecting community, particularly for its “Eevee-lution” cards, which are already commanding hundreds of dollars on the secondary market. This intense interest has prompted several retailers beyond GameStop to implement similar purchasing restrictions to discourage bulk buying by resellers.

This situation mirrors previous distribution challenges in the Pokemon Trading Card Game market. Recent releases like “Scarlet & Violet: 151” and the “Blooming Waters” collection faced similar overwhelming demand and reseller speculation, leading to increased prices for sealed products in secondary markets.

In response to these supply challenges, The Pokemon Company has announced plans to increase printing production for both “Prismatic Evolutions” and the “Surging Sparks” set. Additional “Prismatic Evolutions” products are also scheduled for release following the initial launch, potentially helping to meet the extraordinary demand from collectors and players.
