GTA 6 Performance Details Emerge from Former Rockstar Developer

A former Rockstar Games developer has provided new insights into Grand Theft Auto 6’s technical performance, indicating the game may target 30 frames per second (FPS) rather than the current-generation standard of 60 FPS when it launches on consoles in 2025.

Mike York, who previously worked as an animator at Rockstar Games, shared his technical assessment during an interview with Kiwi Talkz. York suggested that achieving 60 FPS for GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S would present significant challenges for the development team. “I think they’re going to be shooting for 30 FPS,” York stated in the interview with Kiwi Talkz (via GamesRadar).

The former developer emphasized that maintaining stable performance would require extensive optimization efforts from Rockstar Games. According to York, the development team will likely prioritize consistent performance by locking the frame rate at 30 FPS to prevent any potential performance fluctuations during gameplay.

While current-generation consoles typically target 60 FPS for many titles, Rockstar Games has historically taken a different approach to performance targets. The studio’s previous release, Red Dead Redemption 2, continues to operate at 30 FPS on current-generation consoles, despite releasing nearly seven years ago. However, Grand Theft Auto 5’s enhanced version does support 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

York offered a more optimistic outlook for the game’s eventual PC release, suggesting that superior hardware capabilities could enable 60 FPS gameplay. He noted that by the time of the PC version’s launch, the game would likely receive additional optimization improvements, potentially allowing for enhanced performance on high-end gaming systems.
